Alleged Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 renders shows dual camera setup

Recently, Xiaomi expanded its Redmi lineup with yet another strong offer – the Redmi Note 5A. But as appealing as the 720p, Snapdragon 435 device is, considering its low price, what Xiaomi lovers are truly waiting on is its bigger brother – the Redmi Note 5.

A new set of renders has recently popped-up online that claim the major way the Chinese manufacturer plans to add another bit of value to the Redmi mix is through a dual camera setup.

Do take a note that these images look almost nothing like the other batch of images flowing online and the sources of these images are a bit unreliable, so definitely don’t think of this as a surefire thing.

However, if we do give the renders the benefit of the doubt, we definitely like what we see. On the back, the Redmi Note 5 is said to have a 16MP main snapper, accompanied by a 5MP secondary one. While on the front, the likely 5.5-inch, FullHD panel seems to extend almost to the left and right sides of the glass. Then again, most renders tend to over exaggerate the bezel situation at least a bit nowadays, leaving the two cameras as the more exciting part of the rumor.

The display is likely going to be unchanged on the Redmi Note 5. As you have a lineup as successful as this, fiddling with it really isn’t that great of an idea.

We are also expecting to see the same metal unibody design, central-mounted fingerprint reader on the back, capacitive navigation buttons on the front and a 3.5mm audio jack and IR blaster on the top of the phone as the Redmi Note 4.

To reiterate a few other alleged specs, we are anticipating a choice between two efficient 14nm Qualcomm chipsets – the Snapdragon 630 and Snapdragon 660, coupled with 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of storage. Powering that should be a 3,790 mAh battery with QuickCharge 3.0 support, cut down a bit compared to the Redmi Note 4’s 4,100 mAh in order to achieve a slimmer 7.5mm profile. Plus there is a 13MP selfie camera and a Type-C port.

There’s no information on which chipset powers which model, but industry sources claim the tiers and their respective prices will be as follows:

  • 3GB RAM and 32GB Storage: $175
  • 4GB RAM and 32GB Storage: $205
  • 4GB RAM and 64GB Storage: $220

Dedicated microSD slot and front camera flash confirmed for the upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A

Xiaomi made quite a splash in the smartphone world with its Redmi Note 4 value offer. And the upcoming generation of Redmi Note devices has been basking is a surplus of fan attention, especially the cheaper Redmi Note 5A model.

The unveiling event is already scheduled for August 21. There are still some questions to answer regarding specs and variants, but thankfully Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun hit up Weibo today to clear up a couple of things.

For one, the Redmi Note 5A will be the first Redmi device with two dedicated SIM slots and a separate microSD one, for cards up to 128GB. Both the Redmi Note 3 and Redmi Note 4 relied on a hybrid design, so this is a notable step up.

redmi 5a 2.jpg

There are concerns regarding the front-facing camera. Recent specs leaks have been rather confusing in this area, but it is now clear that at least one of the Redmi 5A variants will have a 16MP front camera with a selfie flash.

Perhaps that leaves the cheaper version with a 13MP selfie camera.

Speaking of tiers, we currently know of two main ones. Both are said to share the same 5.5” 720p LCD screen and a 3,000mAh battery inside a metal body that’s 7.3mm thick.

Basic connectivity should be identical as well: 4G with VoLTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS and an IR blaster.

As for the differences, the entry-level one will likely have a Snapdragon 425 chipset, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The “Pro” or “Prime” one is expected to ramp that up to a Snapdragon 430 or 435, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. A fingerprint reader might be exclusive to the latter as well.

The expected price of the Note 5A is CNY 1,000 (about INR 9,621.78), presumably for the Snapdragon 430 model since it compares against a CNY 1,200 (about INR 11,546.14) Redmi Note 5 (which will have Snapdragon 630 and 660 versions).

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A images and specifications leaked online

The Redmi Note 5 and 5A first surfaced online a month ago and we know that 5A will be cheaper than the Redmi Note 5A.

The regular Note 5 will reportedly start at CNY 1,200 / $175 / €155. And Note 5A will be cheaper than it.

Additional details have emerged and the 5A isn’t quite what we expected. We were expecting it to be powered by a Snapdragon 600 series processor. But, dropping down from the Snapdragon 630/660, the more affordable model will use Snapdragon 425 instead (an old, 28nm chip).

And it will have a comparably smaller battery, about 3,080mAh vs. 3,790mAh on the non-A regular Note 5 model. In short, expect less performance and a shorter battery life.

Take a look at Redmi Note 5A’s image:

We can see it is more sleeker then Previous one and has same metal build it retains almost everything from its predecessor and has microUSB slot. However we were thinking that this year’s Note devices by Xiaomi will feature a USB Type-C port. But it is not a big issue.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4: The latest smartphone

Xiaomi just announced its first smartphone for India in 2017. The smartphone comes in two storage variants and at different prices. The base model of 2GB RAM and 32GB internal storage has been priced at Rs 9,999 and the premium model with 4GB RAM and 64GB storage will come at a price of Rs 12,999.

The smartphone will be on sale as Flipkart exclusive from January 23 from 12 pm. It can also be availed at the company’s website, Mi.com. Xiaomi has introduced a new colour variant, that is matte black, apart from the earlier gold and grey colour devices. There is no need for a pre-registration to buy this device. Earlier Xiaomi had put out teasers on Twitter a few days before, which confirmed that it will be announcing the Redmi Note 4 for India. The smartphone will be released by Hugo Barra, the company’s global vice president. Here are the reasons why you should buy or not buy the smartphone:

Positive of the phone

Display and Build

Xiaomi’s device, though not a revolutionary designed smartphone, still looks great and way better than other budget phones. The build quality is quite sturdy, safe and dependable. The speakers are the bottom this time around, along with a micro USB slot. It also has both the options of nano SIM and micro SIM. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has a display of 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) with 2.5D curved glass and 401ppi pixel density. So, it is great for watching videos, reading ebooks and playing games even in daylight conditions.

Battery

Xiaomi stays true to its bigger battery promise, as the new device comes with a huge 4100 mAh battery, which according to the company is 25 percent better than the Redmi Note 3. So, use the device all you want, and it can still give you a minimum of a day’s running time.

Performance and UI

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has a display of 5.5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) with 2.5D curved glass and 401ppi pixel density. The new smartphone runs Xiaomi’s latest MIUI 8 based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and is powered by a deca-core MediaTek Helio X20 coupled with Mali-T880 MP4 GPU, which is expected to improve performance and reduce battery consumption. So, from gaming to heavy tasks, the phone can relatively handle them all. Moreover, you can also tinker with the software as it has MIUI 8 user interface with cool customisation options.

Negative of the phone

Camera

With the feature of PDAF (phase detection autofocus), the phone has a 13-megapixel rear camera and the option of f/2.0 aperture. It can record 1080p videos at 30fps. The front camera of 5-megapixels, which according to Xiaomi, can click wide angle shots extended to 85-degrees. But still, it underperforms in low light conditions. There is too much noise and light reflections in the picture when clicked without proper lighting. Though the HDR feature is a bit redeeming. But then, a camera has never been the USP of the Redmi Note series. When it comes to video, this device still does not have 4K support which many in this range have. Additionally, there is no OIS (Optical Image Stabilization) support as well.

Charging and USB Type-C

While the Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 has a great battery with a whopping 4100mAh power, but ironically it does not have fast charging support. This essentially means that the phone will take a lot of time to be fully charged. So, it is up to the users that they can spend the time to avail the day and half of recharge. Meanwhile, Redmi Note 4, though reliable, is a very boring device. It could have done with the addition of USB Type-C support. It is not that it cannot afford to bring it in this device, as it already did it in China with the Redmi Pro.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 with Snapdragon SoC to launch in India on January 19

Xiaomi has sent out media invites confirming an event on January 19 in New Delhi, and it looks like a new Redmi phone will be launched. The Chinese technology start-up is currently been hosting an explorer contest with its fans, where it has given out its latest Redmi device to these users. Xiaomi will let them test out the phone before it is officially launched. According to various leaks, Xiaomi will launch the new Redmi Note 4 smartphone at the event.

Xiaomi, which recently reported that it crossed INR 68.17 billion in revenue for the year 2016 in India, is gearing up to introduce a new device in its highly successful Redmi series. Last year’s Redmi Note 3 was the highest-selling online device from the company. According to IDC data, Xiaomi is already in number three position in terms of individual smartphone vendors in India.

Redmi Note 4 was unveiled in China last year and features a full metal unibody design coupled with a big 4,100 mAh battery, which was also the highlight of the earlier Note 3 smartphone. The Redmi Note 4 comes in two storage options – 2GB RAM+16GB ROM and 3GB RAM+64GB ROM in China and has a 5.5-inch full HD display (1920×1080 pixels) with 2.5D arc glass design, a 13MP primary camera, and 5MP front camera. The Note 4 has a fingerprint scanner at the back.

In India, Xiaomi is expected to introduce the phone with a Qualcomm processor, since it is not allowed to sell MediaTek processor phones here due to a patent dispute with Ericsson. Earlier a Redmi Note 4X smartphone was leaked from China, which runs Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow with MIUI 8.1 on top, and features 4GB RAM coupled with 64G storage. The processor on this phone is supposed to be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 653 processor, although this device also has a 5.5-inch Full HD display.

Xiaomi’s event announcement doesn’t given any hints on what to expect from the January 19 launch, but it will likely be the Redmi Note 4. We’ll have to wait and see what all versions of the phone are announced in India, and whether the pricing will start at under Rs 10,000 like it did with the Redmi Note 3’s basic variant.
