Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 leaked with 18:9 display and dual rear cameras

The new Redmi Note 5 smartphone for global markets might be announced soon. Two Xiaomi devices have passed through China’s 3C earlier last month, which we suspected were two versions of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 (one with less RAM, Storage, and a slower CPU).

Now some alleged renders of the phone have leaked online.

The renders show a device with very thin top and bottom bezels, akin to the Samsung Galaxy S8. There is also a vertically-placed dual-camera setup at the rear with fingerprint scanner below it. We’ve seen mockups of this device from before, and these renders look similar but much more like a final product.

There is always a possibility that leaked renders are not the real thing or may not be accurate to the final product, so think of them as very detailed mockups for now.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 is expected to feature an aluminum body and a 5.99-inch 18:9 IPS LCD display with FHD+ (1080 x 2160 px) resolution.

It is expected to be powered by a Snapdragon 636 CPU, an upgrade from the Snapdragon 625 that powered the Redmi Note 4. It will have 4GB of RAM. The dual camera setup is slated to be comprised of a 16MP sensor + a 5MP depth sensor.

There’s also a large 4,100 mAh battery and 64GB of internal storage with support for Quick Charge 4.0. The phone will carry a cost of CNY 1499 (around $237) and will supposedly arrive in three colors: gray black and blue.

We might be seeing these phones make a splash at the MWC later this month. It is possible that Xiaomi announce these at MWC since there isn’t going to be a major Mi 7 announcement.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is Flipkart-exclusive in India

Xiaomi’s bezel-less Mi Mix 2 smartphone is arriving in India today (October 10), and now it has been confirmed that the device will be exclusive to online retailer Flipkart at launch.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2

The confirmation is made by a tweet from Flipkart.

Of course, the Chinese company will also be officially selling the phone in the country – it will be available via Mi.com and Xiaomi’s Mi Home stores across India.

The Snapdragon 835-powered handset was made official last month, and has only been available so far in China, where it has proven to be quite popular.

As for its specifications, the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 comes with a 5.99-inch display with edge to edge screen and is powered by the Qualcomm’s current best Snapdragon 835 Processor.

The device runs the latest Android Nougat 7.1 and is backed up by a 3400 mAh battery.

The cameras on the Mi Mix 2 include a 12-megapixel camera at the back that is placed just above a fingerprint sensor. The selfie shooter carries a 5-megapixel lens.

In China, the Mi Mix 2 has been priced at 3299 Yuan (or Rs 33,000) for the 6GB RAM and the 64GB internal storage variant, 3599 Yuan (or Rs 36,000) for a 6GB RAM and 128GB internal storage variant and 3999 Yuan (Rs 40,000) for the 6GB RAM and the 256GB storage variant.

We are expecting similar price range of the smartphone for India as well.

Alleged Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 renders shows dual camera setup

Recently, Xiaomi expanded its Redmi lineup with yet another strong offer – the Redmi Note 5A. But as appealing as the 720p, Snapdragon 435 device is, considering its low price, what Xiaomi lovers are truly waiting on is its bigger brother – the Redmi Note 5.

A new set of renders has recently popped-up online that claim the major way the Chinese manufacturer plans to add another bit of value to the Redmi mix is through a dual camera setup.

Do take a note that these images look almost nothing like the other batch of images flowing online and the sources of these images are a bit unreliable, so definitely don’t think of this as a surefire thing.

However, if we do give the renders the benefit of the doubt, we definitely like what we see. On the back, the Redmi Note 5 is said to have a 16MP main snapper, accompanied by a 5MP secondary one. While on the front, the likely 5.5-inch, FullHD panel seems to extend almost to the left and right sides of the glass. Then again, most renders tend to over exaggerate the bezel situation at least a bit nowadays, leaving the two cameras as the more exciting part of the rumor.

The display is likely going to be unchanged on the Redmi Note 5. As you have a lineup as successful as this, fiddling with it really isn’t that great of an idea.

We are also expecting to see the same metal unibody design, central-mounted fingerprint reader on the back, capacitive navigation buttons on the front and a 3.5mm audio jack and IR blaster on the top of the phone as the Redmi Note 4.

To reiterate a few other alleged specs, we are anticipating a choice between two efficient 14nm Qualcomm chipsets – the Snapdragon 630 and Snapdragon 660, coupled with 3GB or 4GB of RAM and 32GB or 64GB of storage. Powering that should be a 3,790 mAh battery with QuickCharge 3.0 support, cut down a bit compared to the Redmi Note 4’s 4,100 mAh in order to achieve a slimmer 7.5mm profile. Plus there is a 13MP selfie camera and a Type-C port.

There’s no information on which chipset powers which model, but industry sources claim the tiers and their respective prices will be as follows:

  • 3GB RAM and 32GB Storage: $175
  • 4GB RAM and 32GB Storage: $205
  • 4GB RAM and 64GB Storage: $220

Xiaomi Mi Note 3 announced with dual camera system and Snapdragon 660 SoC

The Xiaomi Mi Note 3 arrived alongside the Mi Mix 2.

The Mi Note 3 is a device that sits slightly above the Mi 5X (or Mi A1) with a Snapdragon 660 chipset and it interestingly it has plenty of RAM and storage. It comes with 6GB of RAM and option of 64GB or 128GB of internal storage.

Another good feature is the dual camera system on the rear. The Mi Note 3 packs two 12MP cameras on the back – a regular and a 2x telephoto one. The back cameras offer Portrait Mode while the 16MP front snapper has Adaptable AI Beautify which smooths skin and can even change the shape of a face.

The Xiaomi Mi Note 3 packs a 3,500mAh battery with Quick Charge 3.0.

This smartphone looks beautiful at its price.

The company also launched a video that highlights the most important features of the phone which are the dual camera system, the vanilla Android environment and the sturdy design.

The video is set in rendered museum shaped like the “mi” logo. Inside, the Xiaomi Mi A1 phone is the key exhibition. The video takes us through various halls where different pieces of the phone are introduced.

The video ends with showcasing the three colors of the phone.

Xiaomi launches its first Android One smartphone, the Mi A1

Every Xiaomi smartphone runs its proprietary software layer MIUI but the newly launched Mi A1 runs a experience that is purely designed by Google. The device offers pure Android experience that stays fresh over time with OS upgrades and comes with Google services built in.

This is a good step taken by Xiaomi to attract those people who prefers clutter free, clean user interface over these skins.

The highlight of the Mi A1 is its dual camera setup at the back with a 12 MP wide-angle and a 12 MP telephoto lens. The 50 mm telephoto lens captures the main image and the wide-angle lens assists with the depth of field measurement, and the two lenses work together to create a bokeh. The telephoto lens enables up to 2x optical zoom and for even further shots, Mi A1 offers up to 10x digital zoom.

Also, like the Pixel and Pixel XL by Google in the past, the Mi A1 offers unlimited high-quality photo storage on Google Photos which is amazing thing to have in your device.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 leaked image shows Snapdragon 836, Android 8.0 Oreo and 256GB storage

Xiaomi’s upcoming Mi Mix 2 could become the first smartphone to feature Qualcomm’s updated Snapdragon 836 chipset.

Xiaomi has confirmed via Weibo that it will announce the Mi Mix 2 at an event in China on September 11.

The Mi Mix 2 will also be designed by French designer Philippe Starck and Mix 2 is expected to sport even thinner bezels than its predecessor.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 has been part of multiple leaks in the past and this is the first time we are hearing about the inclusion of the Snapdragon 836 processor.

Earlier reports suggested that Google’s 2017 Pixel lineup could be the first to get the updated processors.

Qualcomm is yet to officially announce the new mobile platform but GizChina has obtained an image which shows the use of Snapdragon 836 processor.

The image also shows the handset will sport a 6.2-inch display with Quad HD+ resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels.

Xiaomi recently signed a deal with Samsung to use the South Korean giant’s Super AMOLED display on its smartphones.

The display on Xiaomi’s Mi Mix 2 could be the same as the one found on Samsung’s Galaxy S8+.

The leaked image also shows the smartphone to be running Android 8.0 Oreo with MIUI 9 skinned on top. It remains to be seen whether Xiaomi launches the device with new Android 8.0 Oreo or Android 7.0 Nougat.

Furthermore, the leak says that the device will use a 20MP rear camera unit and will be backed by 4400mAh battery.

The Mi Mix 2 is also speculated to come with internal storage option of 256GB.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix was announced last year in October and was one of the first devices to make edgeless design mainstream among smartphone makers. In the past year, Samsung and LG have adopted a similar design language and with the Mi Mix 2, Xiaomi is expected to further trim the bezels. Apple is also expected to announce a redesigned iPhone with an edge-to-edge display on September 12 and with Mi Mix 2 arriving a day earlier, it remains to be seen whether Xiaomi steals the thunder from Cupertino giant.

Mi Mix 2 has entered mass production, says Xiaomi’s CEO

The CEO of Xiaomi, Lei Jun, has been posting teasers about the Mi Mix 2, sometimes even from the Mix 2 itself. Yesterday, he shared that the phone has entered mass production and today he even posted a few shots of the retail packaging.

Here are the beginnings of the promo campaign – the schtick is that the phone is nearly invisible when you turn on the camera, because the bezels are barely there.

And here are some more official teasers:

Jun also shared the story behind the 17:9 screen of the original Mi Mix. There was a six month dialog with Google since the company prefers a 16:9 screen on Android phones to improve compatibility. Eventually, Google agreed to implement support for the wider aspect ratio and the rounded corners.

By the way, Xiaomi has scheduled an event for September 11 (yes, the day before Apple’s event) to unveil the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2. Rumored specs vary between impressive and dubious so we have to wait for the official launch to get concrete spec information.

Xiaomi may bring Android One smartphone to the market

If you don’t know already, Google’s Android One project is aimed to bring stock Android experience for budget markets like India and Africa and it may be re-introduced in a Xiaomi smartphone according to a recent report by krispitech.

Xiaomi had launched its Mi 5X smartphone in the Chinese market on 26 July, 2017. However, the phone has been spotted at an Indonesian telecom certifying agency called POSTEL.

The report showed that the software had been designed by Google and also that the security features and apps from Google could be accessed by Android One. This could mean that the Xiaomi may plan to join hands with Google’s Android One project giving its phones stock Android experience rather than running on the traditional MIUI.

This report have been generated by the sources which are not verified and they do not have more information about the same, and it is a speculation based on the listing shown above.

It is believed that the phone may not be called the Xiaomi Mi 5X but is rumoured to be called Xiaomi A1 instead.

The report, however, states that this new Android One Xiaomi phone (A1) will  have the 5.5-inch display, dual rear camera and dual-SIM slot of the Xiaomi 5X model. There are no reports of when this phone may eventually launch or the markets the company is targeting.
Google’s Android One project started ambitiously in 2014 aiming to provide the stock Android experience on affordable smartphones that could remain smart even on the low prices. The launch of this project, however, could not garner the support needed from the consumers of budget smartphones and the project eventually lost its spark.
This new rumoured partnership could perhaps make us see the quality budget smartphones of Xiaomi teamed up with Google’s stock Android experience and revive the Android One project.

Dedicated microSD slot and front camera flash confirmed for the upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A

Xiaomi made quite a splash in the smartphone world with its Redmi Note 4 value offer. And the upcoming generation of Redmi Note devices has been basking is a surplus of fan attention, especially the cheaper Redmi Note 5A model.

The unveiling event is already scheduled for August 21. There are still some questions to answer regarding specs and variants, but thankfully Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun hit up Weibo today to clear up a couple of things.

For one, the Redmi Note 5A will be the first Redmi device with two dedicated SIM slots and a separate microSD one, for cards up to 128GB. Both the Redmi Note 3 and Redmi Note 4 relied on a hybrid design, so this is a notable step up.

redmi 5a 2.jpg

There are concerns regarding the front-facing camera. Recent specs leaks have been rather confusing in this area, but it is now clear that at least one of the Redmi 5A variants will have a 16MP front camera with a selfie flash.

Perhaps that leaves the cheaper version with a 13MP selfie camera.

Speaking of tiers, we currently know of two main ones. Both are said to share the same 5.5” 720p LCD screen and a 3,000mAh battery inside a metal body that’s 7.3mm thick.

Basic connectivity should be identical as well: 4G with VoLTE, Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS and an IR blaster.

As for the differences, the entry-level one will likely have a Snapdragon 425 chipset, 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. The “Pro” or “Prime” one is expected to ramp that up to a Snapdragon 430 or 435, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. A fingerprint reader might be exclusive to the latter as well.

The expected price of the Note 5A is CNY 1,000 (about INR 9,621.78), presumably for the Snapdragon 430 model since it compares against a CNY 1,200 (about INR 11,546.14) Redmi Note 5 (which will have Snapdragon 630 and 660 versions).

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A images and specifications leaked online

The Redmi Note 5 and 5A first surfaced online a month ago and we know that 5A will be cheaper than the Redmi Note 5A.

The regular Note 5 will reportedly start at CNY 1,200 / $175 / €155. And Note 5A will be cheaper than it.

Additional details have emerged and the 5A isn’t quite what we expected. We were expecting it to be powered by a Snapdragon 600 series processor. But, dropping down from the Snapdragon 630/660, the more affordable model will use Snapdragon 425 instead (an old, 28nm chip).

And it will have a comparably smaller battery, about 3,080mAh vs. 3,790mAh on the non-A regular Note 5 model. In short, expect less performance and a shorter battery life.

Take a look at Redmi Note 5A’s image:

We can see it is more sleeker then Previous one and has same metal build it retains almost everything from its predecessor and has microUSB slot. However we were thinking that this year’s Note devices by Xiaomi will feature a USB Type-C port. But it is not a big issue.
